Maverick review by David Knowles

Excellent full album follow-up to her impressive mini CD release last year.

Rachael Warwick released a mini album last year called, fittingly enough, MAVERICK (what a fantastic idea for a title!), and it was supposed to be an introduction to this young lady's work. The result was far better than could be expected as this six- track sampler started getting rave reviews, with even our own Michael Mee (August 2004 issue) giving it four stars.

Michael ended the review with the comment "it may be stating the obvious to say that, while six tracks as good as these are fine as a teaser, next time the expectation will be much higher". Well the expectations have been met, and an exquisite full debut has ensued.
All six-sampler tracks are included with an additional six tracks to take it to a very creditable 46 minutes of play time. Rachael has also co-written ten out of the twelve songs, with only the mid-tempo One Last Look At Love and the raunchy country rocker Rodeo Man coming from other sources. Now, for a British country singer to release a debut album of unknown material is very brave, but to then produce one of such high quality is just outstanding!

The opening track Sunshine is a classy California sounding fun song that has you tapping and humming along. Lovin' is another up-tempo catchy song that is pure country-rock, and has some terrific banjo playing from Charles Butler. Rachael has a vocal maturity that lots of singers strive for, but never achieve. Her voice is totally unique, and oozes confidence as in the bouncy Excuse Me. The last track on the album is called Goodbye, but I hope it is not goodbye as this is a superb album that demands an equally good, if not better follow-up.
